RAPHAELA LE GOUVELLO
Solitary crossing of the Pacific

Animated discussions for Raphaëla le Gouvello…

The weather forecast continues to alternate between good and poor conditions.. Winds are getting more regular and Raphaëla le Gouvello is advancing more rapidly.

To her great disappointment, Raphaëla is noticing that the marine fauna accompanying her across the water these last few weeks is not as present. As the surfboard increases its speed, the dolphin fish, appear no longer to be interested in taking refuge in proximity to the hull of the drifting board.

Friday September 5 2003 : «I had a funny visitor today. A cuttlefish was washed up on my board». Raphaëla added “it was messy!!» The same day, the pc course of Radio France had received several visitors among which Marc Thiercelin, the famous navigator, credited with two “Vendée Globe” prizes and seventh finalist in the last “Figaro sur BERMUDES”: he came to exchange a few words with Raphaëla and compare emotions. L’IFREMER was represented by Laure FOURNIER, Director of Communication, and Marc TAQUET, biologist and a great specialist of dolphin fish, both came to answer Raphaëla’s questions and listen to her comments. Pierre BRISSON, director of the department Transfert de Technologie of the European Space Agency (ESA) was present as well and conveyed his encouragements.

The sea is now much rougher and it is difficult to maintain a straight line in between the hollows of the waves.. She opts for the sail, a judicious decision in uncertain and tricky weather conditions. Rigging is holding up the shock – Raphaëla feels the weight in her arms, shoulders and legs, the entire strain of a day’s navigation, it is time to go and rest. The road is still long- Monotony settles in: «I am less vigilant, I feel I am becoming distracted …this month of September is going to be terribly long!»

All of this apparent languidness does not prevent Raphaëla to watch over her survival equipment and watch out for the possible return of anatifs.

When the weather allows for it, our seafarer takes advantage of the indulgent wind and ample swell to carry out some« surf on crests of waves.

The notion of time remains very much anchored. Raphaëla starts worrying about her pantry: «I must hurry up, the biscuits are getting rancid and the dry fruit are fermenting.». Physically, everything seems to be going for the best. Her body aches less as the days go, Raphaëla is taking good care of herself.

The sea appears to be more and more menacing. Sunday September 7, she decides that it is not worth being defiant:: «it’s too big, I spent the afternoon inside the board, it was terribly hot of course and rather uncomfortable…"

Between the impatience of reaching her destination point and experiencing the pleasure each day on this blue immensity, Raphaëla le Gouvello is torn..
Solitary confinement is taking its toll and Raphaëla admits that it is not easy «especially in moments where certain decisions have to be made alone when conditions are difficult sea or when I have to hang up the telephone…»

Today Monday September 8 2003, the sea appears calmer , so does the wind. Raphaëla le Gouvello begins her day as any other day at sea or almost since her departure on august 5 from Lima, hoping to make significant encounters and profit from «the quiet noise of the sea».
The weather forecast for the next few days promise more clement conditions for navigation. Wind of 20 knots East sector/South East until Wednesday morning but the sea has still big waves

At 16h30, Raphaëla positioned by 10°58 SOUTH / 106°44 WEST.

Distance covered in the last 24h: 52 nautical miles
Total distance covered since Lima : 1760 nautical miles
