Odyssée du Vent established official
partnerships with scientific organisations to supervise Raphaëla's
crossing and validate the web pages produced by the educational
teams.

The scientific partners:
IFREMER
(French Research Institute on Marine Environment and Sea Resources)
As a vet in Aquaculture, Raphaela very well knows the
Departments of Ifremer and has cooperated with them for a
long time, sharing the same development priorities of a sustainable
aquaculture production. All the departments of Ifremer and
particularly the ones working in spatial oceanography and
in fisheries resources are associated with the Pacific crossing
of Raphaela le Gouvello. This will give a new opportunity
to explain the searching actions of Ifremer in these fields.
Ifremer is also based in Tahiti and New-Caledonia and will
be able to welcome and help Raphaela and her team there. An
no doubt that during her crossing, the beautiful dolphin fish
(mahi mahi) which accompanied Raphaela on the Atlantic ocean
should join her again and follow the sailboard, this gives
a great opportunity to the scientists of Ifremer to observe
their behavior.
Chaired by JF Minster, Ifremer will therefore
provides its full support. Several specialists are involved
such as:
• Marc Taquet in La Réunion, who works on the
dolphin fish (mahi mahi): "Raphaëla's crossing on
a sailboard is a unique opportunity to study the dolphin fish
in its natural environment because the vessel is discrete,
unintrusive and non-polluting. During Raphaëla's crossing,
several aspects of the life of this fish can be investigated
over a long period: determinism and duration of the aggregation,
maximum speed, influence of environmental factors, and much
more..."

• Yves Quilfen and Jean-François
Piolle in Brest are specialized in spatial oceanography and
study the speed of winds and ocean streams in the Pacific
areas Raphaëla plan to cross.
• Nicole Lacroix and Loic Antoine in Nantes work on
fisheries.
• Yves Harache and Denis Lacroix in Noumea and Palavas
work in aquaculture.
IRD
(Institut de Recherche et Développement, ex-ORSTROM)
Through their commitment in sustainable development
and their worldwide fields of research, the departments
of the Institute for Research and Development (IRD)
are completely involved in that Pacific crossing in
particular with:
• Bernard Séret in Paris as a shark specialist,
• Erwan Josse and Jean-Jacques Lévenez
in Brest who specialize in large pelagic fish such as
South-Pacific tunas |

LEGOS
(multidisciplinary Laboratory of Studies in Geophysics and
Spatial Oceanography)
Toulouse - CNRS, CNES, IRD, UPS, UMR team - with Christian
le Provost, Yves du Penboat and Boris Dewitte. These experts
monitor satellite data such as ocean temperatures as well
as climatic phenomena such as El Nino, La Nina... Their work
can lead to predicting models for El Nino... This crucial
information will be essential for Raphaëla and her team
to choose the best road.
Raphaela’s sailboard will be equipped
with an Argos beacon included in the monitoring IRD program
as it includes a temperature collector in order to “in
situ” collect data from this zone of the Pacific ocean.
